the only rush with accomodation is if you wanna be with specific people sharing the same kitchen - they say they have enough accomodation for everyone so they won't run out, and it's all the same price so it's damn good in that sence!

otherwise, if you wanna get into the con spirit way early, forums.
the amecon forum will be breeming eith activity from the moment it was launched - people will be planning events, if you wanna runna pannel there's the place to surgest it. it you wanna do a skit or get involved in group cosplay, thats also the place to recruit or join a group.

the other thing you may wanna do is, when it gets closer, check out the tradders so you can work out an appropriate budget.
i always say going to a con with a budgit is a silly thing because no matter what, you will go over, but it's still a good idea to have a gebneral idea.
also checkout the events as and when they're annonced.
they seem to be doing MUCH better with orgonising things so far - you know, tickets when up when they said they would and the site was launched when they said it would be - i think they've bennifited MASIVELY for the year off really... hopefully this year will be a lot better than last... ¬_¬
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

SPLAT!

... that's good stuff right there |-)
